Exploring the Field of Surgery as a Future Career

The Surgery Interest Group (SIG) at UCSF is comprised of medical students with a mission to:

  • Help students explore their interest in the field of surgery.
  • Provide resources for career guidance.
  • Offer opportunities for students to network with surgeons in various subspecialties.
  • Encourage mentoring relationships with faculty and residents.
  • Serve as a forum to discuss current events in surgery.

USN Med Surgery 2019SIG offers lectures and social gatherings that are open to all students. In addition, we coordinate four electives for first and second year medical students. Email notifications are sent to all first and second year medical students. Please also see our Student Activities Fair flyer for more information.

U.S. News and World Report recently ranked the surgery education curriculum for medical students, taught by UCSF Department of Surgery faculty, No. 4 out of 177 medical and osteopathic schools surveyed nationwide, placing it in the top 2.5% of all programs. The  curriculum encompasses didactic in-class learning with early longitudinal immersion in clinical teams and is inquiry-focused emphasizing posing questions that push the frontiers of science and understanding of human health and disease.
