Organ Transplant Experience Elective

This elective is designed to offer students a comprehensive experience in the field of transplant surgery, both inside and outside the operating room. Medical students will follow a living kidney donor/recipient pair longitudinally, throughout their inpatient and outpatient care at UCSF.

Course Objectives

  • Develop longitudinal relationships with a living donor/recipient pair, their families, and their medical & surgical teams 
  • Become familiar with the pre and post operative responsibilities of the medical & surgical teams
  • Observe a living donor kidney transplant surgery
  • Become more knowledgeable about the process of living donation and organ transplantation

Prerequisites

  • 1st and 2nd year UCSF medical students who have completed OR Assist: Surgical Skills
